I'm writing a cover letter to apply for a job and I can't get past Dear, (blank)
I'm pretty embarresed by this, but the emloyers name is Sashi Singh and I really don't want to sound racist here but I don't know if its a male of female name. So, should I forget the whole "Mr" or "Mrs" and write the empoyers full name (I'm worried this is too personal). Or just write "Sir or madam" even though the employer name will be written on the envelope. I totally fail at jobseeking I should just give up and sign on for free goverment money.

Swany, as much as personalizing a cover letter may help, don't sweat it that much. Usually the thing gets little more than a cursory glance nowdays and then goes into the circular file. Just put "Sir or Madam". Really, those things are so form-letter-tastic that it's not even funny.

If the employer has other employees, especially a secretary, could you give them a call and ask them? Without saying who you are, of course, just that you need to mail this person a letter and don't know how to address them.
If not, I'd stay stick with a first name basis other than the formalities at the beginning and end of the letter. It's a little casual, but far better than addressing them by the wrong gender. |

Hmmm you could put, Dear Sir/Madam. I've done that a few times.

I did a quick search on a baby name site and I found that "Sashi" is an Indian name for girls.
As for how to address her... ah, I can't really help you there. >_> I'm not good with that kind of stuff. DX As for the closing, I'd go with "Sincerely." I hope I helped a bit.
